Perched on a steep hillside overlooking the ocean, this timber staircase was thoughtfully designed to blend with the natural landscape and serve a meaningful purpose. Built with precision to navigate rugged rocks and uneven terrain, the stairs were constructed to allow the homeowners’ mother to easily descend from the hilltop to the grassy area below for her daughter’s wedding. The existing stone steps were too uneven for safe passage, so the new staircase was carefully placed over them, providing a solid and reliable path.

Drawing on our experience in boatbuilding skills, we worked with the slope’s unique challenges—off-angles, varying heights, and natural obstacles—to create joints that fit together seamlessly, offering both structural integrity and aesthetic beauty. The timber itself was left unfinished at the homeowner’s request, allowing the stairs to weather naturally over time, giving them an appearance of age and history while maintaining the strength of their original craftsmanship.
